Hale Pa’i Printing Museum in Lahainaluna, Maui

Apparently there’s a blizzard in the Northeast United States, and people are making a big deal about it because I guess it’s not supposed to snow in winter or something. They are calling it Juno. Anyway, while some of you are stuck in your homes watching reruns and eating Doritos, why not read about a tiny museum in Hawaii. You know, dream of warmth and beaches and history and paper. The Hale Pa’i Printing Museum in Lahainaluna, Maui was originally “founded by missionaries in 1834 (as) the Hale Pa’i Printing House. (It) was the first printing shop in Hawaii. It published the first newspaper west of the Rocky Mountains, as well as books in Hawaiian, maps and paper money. The shop was closed in the 1940s and fell into disrepair. In the 1980s the building was restored and turned into a museum. The museum has a replica of the shop’s original Ramage press as well as samples of type and pages printed when the shop was in operation.”
