This Belongs in a Museum

Once called the "Stephen Fry of Museum Blogging," this tumblog, written by a frustrated museologist, is dedicated to the small, random museums and weird attractions of the world. Always informative, usually funny, sometimes offensive.

Bringing you museum-approved grammatical errors and typos since 2010.

Who I Follow

I’ve decided to bring back an old post because 1.) I’m lazy. 2.) You’re lazy and I know many new readers are not going to read shit from 2 years ago. 3.) It’s Halloween so it’s time to focus on the scary, creepy stuff. 4.) Why the hell not?

With all the culture, art, history and traditions in Florence, you wouldn’t think they’d have a Serial Killer Museum. But they do. Even though I’ve never been there, it supposedly is not a cheap, morally dubious cash-in, but is genuinely well done. There’s a sense of context and history – with the original French mass murders and Hungarian vampiresses of the 15th century – while also emphasizing on how such crimes are solved.

Who doesn’t want to take the whole family to listen to a man with a creepy robotic voice describe the crimes of John Wayne Gacy and Ted Bundy in infinitely gory detail? I know I do. Step back in time with the clown killer in a recreation of his living room, with the bones of his victims buried beneath. Yay! There’s also mock-ups of gas chambers and electric chairs. And last but not least, Ed Gein, the inspiration for Buffalo Bill in Thomas Harris’ The Silence of the Lambs makes an appearance in his shack, which was created out of the skin of his female victims. So forget that Renaissance art and architecture for a minute, and go visit something that is truly unique (and creepy).
