Wow! October is right around the corner, which can only mean one thing. It’s almost time for my annual attempt to highlight spooky museums and historic places, like the “Most Haunted House in Sweden” and Italy’s Serial Killer Museum for example. So in order to get you people ready for the upcoming creepiness, let’s talk about the Rat King, you know, that nest of rodents who live so close their tails actually became twisted together. Oh, how wonderful it must have been to live during the plague years. Fun times! Actually I take it back as I just read there are an estimated seven billion rats living now!?! That’s one per human. Or one billion per island. (Yes, that’s how many rats live in Britain. Good luck getting to sleep tonight.) Anyway, let’s get back to the Rat King, a cryptozoological curiosity. Although this phenomenon is associated with medieval folklore, a few modern examples have been found. One of the largest Rat King “specimens” is kept by the Mauritianum Museum in the German town of Altenburg. Over thirty rats are mummified grotesquely together as a giant rat ball for all to see. I bet you’re just counting the days until October starts as I’m sure you can’t wait to read more posts like this one haha!
