Ashley Bryan, who will turn 93 years old in a few weeks, is a writer and illustrator of children’s books. Although he was born in New York City, he has spent the last 40 years living in retirement on Little Cranberry Island in Maine. But that doesn’t mean he’s sitting back doing nothing. Besides his paintings and illustrations, Bryan also enjoys building stained glass windows from beach glass, creating paper-mâché, and making puppets and collages. His puppets are usually made of scraps, rags, driftwood, and bones he finds around the island. The Ashley Bryan Center was formed in 2013 to preserve, protect and care for Bryan’s books and art, his collections and memorabilia, as well as his legacy. Strangers are more than welcome into his home and artist’s studio where he will give you a tour of his work, and even accept the work of others. He’s just that kind of guy.
