I wouldn’t consider myself an urban explorer, especially compared to some photographers I know, but I’ve been to a few abandoned buildings and sites in my day. It’s really not that big of a deal…so you go through a hole in a fence or whatever? Those “No Trespassing” signs mean nothing, like, who wants to follow made-up rules, anyway?
The Atlantis Marine Park in Two Rocks, Australia is an abandoned tourist attraction about 60 km (or about 37 miles) north of Perth. For almost 25 years, the gates have been closed at the water park, which existed for barely a decade between 1981 and 1990. Left in ruins, a number of the surviving limestone statues, including a towering bust of King Neptune, have been vandalized. But the site isn’t as neglected as one might think. It is actually owned by property developers, the Fini Group, who for the last five years have attempted to build a mix of commercial, entertainment and retail but their proposal has still not been approved by the city. Apparently their plans include saving King Neptune. Thank god for that.
